EDRIC and SYLVAINE
A short while back, I stumbled upon a story from 1908, written by Brian Hooker and illustrated by Howard Pyle, called Edric and Sylvaine. Besides Pyle's incredible illustrations, the story held themes that I thought Strange Familiars folks might find interesting.
It is the story of Edric the Singer, who wandered the wild places and took a faerie wife, Sylvaine, from among the Singing Women of the Woods–and of Sylvaine's tragic death and wondrous rebirth.
I decided, almost immediately, that this story deserved a reprint, and went about assembling a print version. Somewhere along the way, I decided that I wanted to try to make an audio book version as well. I then decided to add an ambient backing track because...why not? (I also made a long form instrumental track remixed from the ambient sounds used as accompaniment for the audio book– which comes with the audio book download)
You can get the booklet and the audio book over at bandcamp: https://stonebreath.bandcamp.com/album/edric-and-sylvaine
Since it's something somewhat like what we do on Strange Familiars (albeit usually not with fiction), I generated a code for Patreon patrons which makes the audio download 50% off for the rest of the month. Another advantage of becoming our patron at Patreon.
The booklet can be purchased from etsy as well: https://lostgrave.etsy.com/listing/4441944126
If this does well, we might do similar curated reprints (with or without audio books) in the future. One of my great loves is books from the "classic" era of illustration.
